Bleeding Gums: Causes and What to Do

Gums that bleed when you brush are usually a sign of early gum disease (gingivitis). It is very common and, caught early, completely reversible.
Common causes
- Plaque and tartar building up along the gum line.
- Skipping flossing or brushing too roughly.
- Smoking or chewing tobacco.
- Vitamin deficiency or certain health conditions.
What you can do
Brush gently twice a day, clean between the teeth daily, and rinse well after meals. A professional cleaning (scaling) removes hardened tartar that brushing cannot.
If bleeding continues for more than a week or two, or your gums are swollen and tender, visit the clinic. Untreated gum disease (pyorrhea) can loosen teeth, so early care matters.
