Root Canal Treatment: Myths and Facts

A root canal (RCT) removes infection from inside a tooth and saves it from being pulled out. Modern techniques make it comfortable — often no more difficult than a routine filling.
Myth vs fact
- Myth: A root canal is very painful. Fact: With local anaesthesia the procedure is nearly painless.
- Myth: It is better to just remove the tooth. Fact: Keeping your natural tooth is almost always healthier.
- Myth: Root canals cause illness. Fact: This is false — RCT removes infection, it does not cause disease.
- Myth: You need many long visits. Fact: Most cases are completed in one or two visits.
When do you need one?
Deep decay, a cracked tooth, or a long-lasting toothache and sensitivity to hot and cold can mean the inner pulp is infected. A dental X-ray confirms whether RCT is needed.
After the treatment a crown is usually placed to protect the tooth. If you have ongoing tooth pain, do not wait — early treatment is simpler and cheaper.
