Children's Dental Care: A Parent's Guide

Milk teeth matter. They help your child eat, speak clearly and guide the adult teeth into place. Caring for them early prevents pain and costly treatment later.
Everyday habits
- Start cleaning gums even before the first tooth appears.
- Use a small soft brush and a rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste for toddlers.
- Help your child brush until about age seven.
- Limit sugary snacks and juices, especially between meals.
- Avoid putting a baby to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice.
First dental visit
A child should see a dentist by their first birthday or when the first tooth appears. Early visits are gentle, build comfort, and catch small problems before they grow.
If you notice white or brown spots on your child’s teeth, or they complain of pain, bring them in for a check-up. Prevention is always easier than treatment.
